Hello and thanks for reading our blog InternAlert. Our goal is to provide up-to-the minute information concerning new internship opportunities as well as current issues that affect the world of interns and internships. In our first post, we feel it necessary to state some of our beliefs and direction we would like for this blog to go. Future postings will focus more on current new internship opportunities. Please jump in and use this forum to help inform and improve the entire internship process.

What Is an Internship

Dictionary.com defines an internship as “any period of time during which a beginner can acquire experience in an occupation, profession or pursuit.”

Penny Lorretto from www.internships.about.com states:

“Internships provide opportunities to experiment and pursue careers that match academic and personal interests. There are many benefits to completing an internship including the development of strong teamwork skills balanced with the exercise of individual responsibility, the opportunity to experiment with jobs that match academic and personal interests, the chance to develop industry-specific abilities while enjoying the advantages of a liberal arts education. Internships also increase the likelihood of building professional networking contacts and mentoring relationships. Internships help students become viable, experienced job applicants when seeking employment after graduation. In fact, many employers consider internship experience in the hiring process, and often look to their own interns as the best potential candidates for full-time positions.”

Our belief:

Internships are a valuable educational opportunity. The purpose of an internship is to start or further a career.

An internship is not a job.

When considering the value of an internship, the perspective needs to be long term. All internships provide a resource for an individual to grow – it is an opportunity for real life learning. Internships are as valuable as the intern makes them be.

An internship is valuable on resumes. An internship shows employers initiative and leadership qualities.

An internship is a positive first step toward becoming an expert in your chosen field.

An internship can provide feedback towards a field you may not want to pursue.

Internships provide a business the opportunity to acquire and cultivate the top talent.

ALL INTERNSHIPS ARE A GOOD THING!

The 2009 Economic Reality

The world of Internships has been affected by the economy – just like any other industry. Nobody will deny that there are fewer internship opportunities available now than 2008 or 2007. Many companies have slashed entire internship programs that had existed for decades.

History has proven that rough economic times can illuminate inefficiencies and waste. Many of the companies that have eliminated their internship programs viewed them as an 9-12 week application process. From this perspective, an internship program is simply a cost and vulnerable when the economy gets tough.

Forward thinking companies know that talent acquisition and cultivation must continue or eventually a business will die. Internships provide an opportunity to utilize an intern as a valuable part of the team. Interns want to contribute and these companies are allowing them to do so. Challenging an intern to improve company processes is a win-win for all.

A down economy provides internship seekers the opportunity to prove their value. Internships are harder to find and those with a plan on how to find them will quickly differentiate themselves from the pack.

Today is a great time to be an intern. Establish goals and dreams and follow them. Tomorrow’s leaders will be those finding answers to today’s problems.

Paid vs. Non- Paid vs. Auction

2009 has found much written on the blogosphere concerning non-paid internships and auctions.

Many believe that a non-paid internship is similar to a “dictatorship of the proletariat” and that lost jobs are being replaced by interns working for free. Some of these encourage a boycott of internships.

More still believe that auctions are totally unfair and favor the richest kids.

Our belief:

Internships are not a job. Waiting on tables or working in a plant- these are jobs. Internships are an opportunity to learn.

There is a common misconception that all internships are non-paid. That simply isn’t true- many pay very well. Others provide housing, stipends, and college credits.

If your college doesn’t provide credits, then expend a little legwork. Talk with your advisor, career center and department head to explore what it would take to earn credit. Most employers would be more than willing to do their part as far as a curriculum/ task list and sign-offs or reports. How would it look on your resume to have iniated a new program at your school?

Auctions and guarenteed internships for money are now a very real part of the world of internships. Many interns are benefitting greatly from these internships.

I remember reading an interview with an intern whose family purchased an internship with Yahoo. The intern was very greatful and stated that she wouldn’t have gotten the internship if her parents hadn’t purchased it. Can you blaime her parents- consider the value on her resume now with the Yahoo internship vs. the $5000 the internship cost. Her starting salary will more than make up this investment.

But is it fair? The world of internships is real world. Is the real world fair? Is it fair that some students attend elite private schools while others attend community colleges? Is it fair that some students are fighting for internships while others are in a hospital fighting cancer?

Auctions and paid internships may not be an even playing field but neither is life. The interns that are able to participate usually receive great benefits- benefits that certainly can outweigh the cost.

These internships are good but are not necessarily the best. Employers are looking for success stories and interns that have excelled will have an advantage. Students that make the search effort have a story to tell that interns who paid for their internship do not.

Besides- how good will a boycott look on your resume.

We are not naive enough to believe that there are not business people out there that will try to take advantage of interns-

Internships are not serfdoms- you can and should leave if your integrity or principles are compromised. You still have learned a lesson and have a story to tell.

ALL INTERNSHIPS ARE GOOD!
